WDs are a rare occurrence during this time, as the jet stream responsible for them typically migrates north by April-May. However, recent years have seen an unusual persistence of the jet stream’s late retreat, attributed to global warming. This year saw 16 WDs in June-August alone, with eight occurring in August.
The interactions between these weather systems led to some remarkable rainfall events in Delhi, including the onset of monsoon on July 2 and several subsequent heavy rain spells. While these events brought much-needed relief to the city, they also had a devastating impact elsewhere, such as in the hills of HP and Uttarakhand, where cloudbursts and flash floods claimed lives and damaged infrastructure.
