Despite having access to satellites, weather observations, and sophisticated climate models, the region’s governments and businesses struggle to turn predictions into timely decisions.
This pattern is all too familiar in Southeast Asia: possessing tools to predict extreme weather yet failing to act on those predictions. SpaceAI, a convergence of artificial intelligence and space technologies, aims to bridge this gap by transforming vast amounts of environmental data into predictive intelligence.
SpaceAI combines satellite-based Earth observation with large language models, cloud computing, and advanced analytics to pinpoint areas at risk. Unlike traditional Earth observation, which relies on retrospective analysis, AI enables governments to act proactively. This requires sustained investment in space research and development, as well as a commitment to training a workforce that can translate sophisticated analytics into actionable decisions.
Climate resilience has become a question of economic competitiveness: countries that can anticipate and adapt to extreme weather will have a significant edge over those that cannot. Southeast Asia’s governments would do well to take note: the time for action is now, and SpaceAI could be their edge against El Niño if they choose to use it effectively.
