The news that two workers were pulled alive from a hydropower tunnel in Nepal has sparked a mix of emotions. The economic toll is equally devastating: flooding has caused an estimated $2.5 billion in damage to infrastructure and property.
This disaster is part of a disturbing trend of landslides, floods, and glacial lake outbursts that have been on the rise due to climate change. The 2014 landslide in Jhinanduta, Nepal, which killed over 150 people, or the 2020 floods in India’s Kerala state, which displaced hundreds of thousands, should serve as stark reminders of what’s at stake.
Rescue efforts are ongoing, with teams working around the clock using controlled blasts, excavators, and earth-moving equipment to try and reach trapped workers. Concerns about air quality and access to drinking water have added to the challenges. The emotional toll on families waiting for news is impossible to overestimate – Amir Maharjan, brother of one of the rescued workers, said, “I can’t explain what we are feeling at the moment. We are just grateful to God.”
As Nepal struggles to come to terms with this disaster, a pressing question looms: what can be done to mitigate such risks in the future? Investing in more robust infrastructure and emergency preparedness is crucial, as well as grappling with the root causes of these catastrophes – climate change, for one. It’s imperative that we learn from this tragedy, leveraging technological innovations and international cooperation to safeguard lives and prevent similar disasters.
